PROTECT OUR DISPATCH HALL

If Local 13 fails to fill skilled work (CY, CL, HL) on Friday November 1st and Saturday November 2nd, our dispatch check-in system will drastically change.  The new system will be a high/low hybrid.  If on the second of a month an individual is below average, that person shall check in on average hours.  There will be no checking in on zero hours.  Taking the 1st and 2nd of November off in order to position yourself on the board is beneficial to that individual.  IT IS NOT BENEFICIAL TO THE RANK AND FILE.  An organization is only powerful when we sacrifice for the greater good.  Protect our Dispatch Hall, please check-in and cover OUR skilled work on November 1st and 2nd.

BE EXTRA CAREFUL IN DECEMBER

The Holiday Season is soon upon us and it is easy to have our minds on many things.  Please remember to give extra attention to all aspects of Safety while at the job-site.  Also, December is Zero “0” Damage Month at the Toyota operation at LB-83.  Let’s all do our part to make sure we are handling each vehicle in a damage-free way.  Whether you’re a Lasher, Driver, or Foremen, everything you do during the discharge will help to achieve our goal of Zero “0” Damage.

ILWU LONGSHORE DIVISION

CONTRACT CAUCUS

The ILWU Caucus Delegates will be attending the Longshore Contract Caucus on Monday, February 24th through Friday, March 7, 2014 in San Francisco at the Parc 55 Wyndham Hotel. This Contract Caucus will set policy for the Longshore Division for the upcoming 2014 negotiations.  If you are interested in submitting a Resolution, you may contact your Caucus Delegates.  The Delegates are as follows (in alphabetical order): Ray Benavente, Alonzo Bonilla, Joe “Jo Jo” Cortez, Jesse “Nacho” Enriquez, Luke Hollingsworth, George Lujan, Bobby Olvera, Michael Piazza, Frank Ponce De Leon and David Serrato.  You may call Irene Huerta at Local 13 (310-830-1130 x115) and ask her to take a message for the Delegate; she will then contact the Delegate on your behalf.  Resolutions may either address contract (PCLCD) or safety code (PCMSC) issues for the Longshore Division.  Your resolution must be sent to Irene Huerta at the Local’s address listed above or emailed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by December 16, 2013 as no official deadline has been set at this time.

“WHEREAS”

Whereas means because or considering that.  We use the word whereas to identify the basis of making our Resolution. This might be explaining a problem that we hope to solve, or an unsafe work condition that we hope to remedy.

MANY OF THE RANK AND FILE OF LOCAL 13 HAVE LITTLE OR NO EXPERIENCE WITH CAUCUS RESOLUTIONS

“AND WHEREAS”

If there is more than one reason for making the Resolution, the argument for the Resolution proceeds through separate logical steps.  We introduce new components with the phrase “and whereas.”

IDEAS FOR THE CONTRACT FROM THE RANK AND FILE CAN CONTRIBUTE TO A FINER CONTRACT AND BETTER LIFE ON THE WATERFRONT

“THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED”

Here is the actual Resolution.  This is where we define the action we want to take.  If this involves adding to or changing the language of the Agreement, be precise about which Section we are talking about.

THE DELEGATES SHALL PREPARE A SIMPLE EXAMPLE TO BE USED TO INSTRUCT THE RANK AND FILE AS TO THE FORM, CONTENT, AND PURPOSE OF THE RESOLUTION

Fraternally,

Chris Viramontes Julie Brady Mark Williams

President Vice President Secretary Treasurer
