Longshoremen Help Those In Need

The Press-Telegram reports:

Longshoremen handed out 1,500 packed Thanksgiving baskets Tuesday in an annual tradition that’s fed more than 150,000 people through the years.

Since 1998, local members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union have pooled funds to purchase turkeys, fresh vegetables, fruits and canned goods for needy families around San Pedro Bay.

“It’s really rewarding for all of us to pitch in a little for needy families, and hopefully help them enjoy a nice feast with loved ones,” said Lisa Tonson, an ILWU crane operator who helps coordinate the turkey giveaway and a Christmas celebration for kids.

Each basket feeds between 10 and 12 people and includes a 12-pound turkey, stuffing, yams, beans, rice, mango and several other items.

ILWU Locals 13, 26, 52, 63 and 94 participated in the event.
